Destiny 2 New Years Event is once again The Dawning. It's still going on, and is set to end on Jan. 5. The event is meant to celebrate everything about the year, for whatever that's worth in 2020. Players must work on collectively accumulating event currency and hit a threshold before unlocking the full rewards of The Dawning. True to 2020 fashion, completing the event isn't in the numbers unless Bungie intervenes.

Destiny 2 New Years Event: What Happened?

This year we ushered in a new era. We wielded the Light. We embraced the Darkness. And now, we ring the cowbells.

This year, Bungie is asking players to generate Dawning Spirit as a community challenge via in-game events. There are bounties that can be completed weekly, and the challenge can be completed if the community can generate one billion Dawning Spirit.

The event quests will unlock a new ship and other seasonal goodies, but can only be claimed before the weekly reset happens on Jan. 5. The final reward is unlocked only when one billion Dawning Spirit is reached.

It doesn't seem likely players will reach the requisite billion Community Spirit, given the current trajectory. Players on r/DestinyTheGame have estimated that the event will come up short by about a quarter-million.

The final prize isn't known yet, but it would be bad PR if players couldn't complete it. Without intervention from Bungie increasing Spirit yield, it doesn't seem likely the goal will be reached. Previously, Bungie altered the conditions of the Season of the Worthy even to make the goal obtainable.
